2026 trips that we took

2026 is turnig out to be quite the year for camping and travel in general.

Trip #1, For the first of the season we took one of the longer distance trips that we have taken at 2160 round trip miles.
We went to Hilton Head Narional RV Resort
By far the best campground/RV resort we have ever been to. clean and level concrete pads, immaculate bathrooms that are better then most homes, large laundry rooms, 3 bay dog wash room, and a lazy river along with the pool. There was a great playground for the kids, pickleball courts, nice clubhouse, several group firepits and one of the best activities/craft person we have met. (thanks Heather)
Close enough to Blufton that we bycicled there several times, biked on the beaches of Hilton Head as well. We also took a side trip to Charleston.

We did break the trip up both down and up with a stop at Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA this is a great little wooded campground that is close to alot of hiking trails, it's a shame we didnt have the time to stay an extra day or so to explore the area. The spots did seem a little close to each other although this was not a problem as we were there during the off season with very few people camping there. The restrooms were nice with private barhrooms and showers but the shower was smaller than the one in our camper, but since we only stayed a night we did not hook up the water to the camper. Be sure to check the direction you are coming to the campground from as the one road is quite steep and has more than a few switchbacks where a longer rig will have a problem with.

On our way home we also stopeed at a Buc ee's that is on Route 95. Maybe it was the location, but the place was so packed that it really affected the experiance, it was simply unpleasent to be there. We hit the restroom and picked up some jerky and did a quick walk around but had to get out. Maybe other locations that arent so crowded, so if we come across another one that is less crowded we'll give it another try.

Camping trip #2 was with the Jersey Pioneers at Beachcomber campground in Cape May, NJ

We last stayed here in 2002 so its about time we revisited the place. We found that it looked almost exacctly the same as we last left it. There are sections that look like a small town and not a campground with the number of park mobile seasonals. Bathrooms were dated but clean, we were there before Memorial Day so it was still off season. Sites are a little tight to get into with some narrow roads, fences and light posts, but they claim that they are removable if you need them to be. Sites were clean and just large enough and best of all they have trees. We spent alot of time site seeing along with the group and on our own. Sunset beach is always the place you want to be during the sunset. and no trip to Cape may is complete without visiting the Cape May County Zoo.
We also took a ride/pedal in the rail bikes which was alot easier then you would think. We recomend checking it out when you are there.
Something we really didnt like but managed was the lack of wifi or cable at the campground, we dont typically watch TV when camping but its nice to have for bad weather or late night viewing.

Camping trip #3 was a 4 day trip to the North East Wood Carvers Roundup at Cherry Ridge Campground in Honesdale, PA (570)488-6654.
This is a small family owned campground near Lake Wallenpaupack and deserves your visit. They are known for the Woodcarvers round up as well as Line and Square dancing weekends. Sites are big and roomy unless you are down by the pond which you can swim or cannoe in, they do not have a pool. Restrooms/showers are older but kept clean. They also have cabins large and small to rent. We were there for the roundup so I spent all my time at the campground but my wife did make it out to Honesdale for some shopping.

Next is a trip to the Woodstock NY area. We stayed at Rip Van Winkle Campground in Suagerties, NY 845-246-8334. This is a nice wooded campground with alot of activities for kids. Several playgrounds, a pond for fishing and boating, an RC car track, mini golf, pool and an arcade. We even had a few ducks that would visit us each morning at our site. If we were to visit the area again we would definately stay here again. Unfortunately with only a few exceptions, we didnt really see anything that would draw us back. From the crazy guy cutting the grass in the cemetary, who I thought was going to get physical with us when we complained about gettig pelted with grass and rocks when he came within 5 feet of us on his ride-on, to the cranky shop owners and waiters. The town of Woodstock is best summed up in a bumper sticker I saw there. It said Welcome to Woodstock, spend your money and go home. I would say dont bother going quite honestly. We also toured Saugerties downtown where all of the Art Dogs were. There are some nice shops and galleries there. Kingston is another place we visited. We tried to get to the Rondout Lighthouse but the trail was blocked due to flooding. While the city is quite historic it is also a little bit too much of a city for us. Part of the problem on this trip was the weather was aweful for this trip which limited what we could do but In spite of all this we actualy did enjoy our time there as we were with a few friends.

We next took a trip to Gettysburg PA and stayed at Granite Hill Camping Resort. Thhis is another campground we last stayed at in 2007. This time we were here for the Bluegrass Festival. Back in 07 I complained about the sites being small and close to each other the over crowded and unsupervised pool and the lack of grooming that I would expect for a resort. well, nothings changed, still unkept sites that are too close, an unruly pool and just not all resort like at all. The Bluegrass fesr was pretty good with all top notch artists. We were able to do some site seeing. We took the Auto tour of the battlegrounds, went to tour Eisenhowers home, which I highly recomend! Stopped at the Battlefield resource center for a little family research as well as walk the downtown area. Restrooms were mostly clean but havent been update since at least 2007. So if we ever do get back to Gettysburg we will definately try a different campground, even thoug I said the same in 07.
